ILLUSTRATIVE MIGRATION SCENARIO

Adobe Creative Cloud exit plan

Replace selected creative tasks, not a whole suite by name. GIMP handles raster images, Inkscape vectors and Blender 3D; publishing and video may need other tools.

Illustrative planning scenario, not a reported customer project. Validate the current vendor edition, export permissions and your own workflows before making a decision.

Planning complexity: High

Quick answer: Replace selected creative tasks, not a whole suite by name. GIMP handles raster images, Inkscape vectors and Blender 3D; publishing and video may need other tools. These are candidate components, not a promise of a one-to-one replacement.

Compare the alternative components →

Where the dependencies sit

Editable PSD/AI/INDD projects, linked assets, fonts, plugins and client delivery requirements can keep a studio on the original tools.

Map the work before selecting software

Ask each team which functions are essential, which can change and which can be retired. Separate standard processes from custom logic, and document who owns each decision.

Data that needs a migration decision

Collect editable originals, links, fonts with usage rights, export presets and final delivery files before changing subscriptions.

Integrations to preserve

Check print shops, asset libraries, colour profiles, review tools and render pipelines. Agree accepted formats with recipients.

Identity and access map

Review cloud asset ownership and team-library access when staff leave or subscriptions change.

Candidate components

ComponentRoleLicence
GIMPDesign & mediaGPL-3.0-or-later
InkscapeDesign & mediaGPL-2.0-or-later
BlenderDesign & mediaGPL-3.0-or-later (binaries)

Identity, backup, monitoring and integration design remain part of the architecture. Each component needs its own fit and edition review.

Match the creative task to an alternative workflow

Start with established tools for a bounded job, then compare experimental candidates on copies of the same files. No entry below establishes complete Adobe feature or project compatibility. This is a source-based desk review, not a hands-on benchmark.

Task-level starting points; each workflow needs its own acceptance test.
Creative taskTools to evaluateAcceptance checks and limits
Raster editing and illustrationCheck layered files, typography, colour profiles and the required delivery exports. Krita is also a candidate for painting and illustration; neither tool guarantees complete PSD fidelity.
Vector illustrationTest editable SVG/PDF, text, fonts, effects and the recipient’s colour and print workflow. Keep Illustrator for projects whose required behaviour does not transfer.
Video editingUse representative camera footage; check timeline edits, audio sync, proxies, captions and final codecs. Adobe project, plug-in and effect compatibility requires separate verification.
Raw photographs and photo developmentCheck every camera model, raw decoding, colour calibration and export. These tools do not recreate the whole Lightroom catalogue, cloud or team workflow.
PDF splitting/merging and searchable scansSeparate page organisation from OCR. PDFsam Basic is distinct from paid editions; neither candidate replaces all Acrobat editing, signing or compliance functions.
3D, compositing and motion workEvaluate suitable Blender jobs separately. Rebuild a representative composition; do not assume existing After Effects projects or plug-ins can be opened and preserved.
Page layout and publishingRebuild a sample publication and obtain print-provider approval for fonts, colour, bleed and exported PDF. Native InDesign project migration needs a separate route.
Short-form video — beta pilotPilot note reviewed 18 October 2026, based on v0.2.7. Test a real multitrack/caption project through save, reopen and export on the exact build; check the profile’s platform/export caveats and model licences. Keep the current CapCut/Adobe workflow until the deliverable passes.

Seven ArtCraft projects: experimental pilot candidates

ArtCraft publishes seven independently developed creative-app projects inspired by familiar Adobe workflows. The versions below were checked on 8 October 2026. All seven belong in a pilot; available releases and installers do not establish production readiness. PhotoCraft explicitly cannot yet replace Photoshop for daily professional work, and EffectCraft is not yet an After Effects replacement for client work.

The repositories declare MIT OR Apache-2.0 for application code. Bundled assets retain separate licences and attribution requirements; ArtCraft names, logos and branding are excluded from the code licence. Optional models, integrations and hosted services need their own licence and cost review.

The maintainers describe clean-room development using public specifications and documentation. This is their provenance claim, not an independent audit; no evidence reviewed here supports a claim that Adobe source was copied or its applications decompiled.

ArtCraft’s official app lineup

Source/release review dated 8 October 2026; all seven are pilot-only.
Project and sourceWorkflow to exploreReviewed releasePilot limits
PhotoCraftImage editingv0.5.0Early alpha. Test copies of layered files; typography, advanced workflows and plug-in compatibility remain incomplete.
VectorCraftVector illustrationv0.7.0In development. Verify SVG/PDF edits and advanced text/effects; feature breadth does not establish Illustrator interaction fidelity.
FilmCraftVideo editingv0.4.0In development. Test camera footage, audio and actual exports on each platform. No plug-in hosting; do not assume HEVC export from conflicting documentation.
LightCraftPhoto library and raw developmentv0.4.0In development. Test camera-specific decoding/calibration; some raw formats may use embedded previews. Its experimental browser library is not a safe sole copy of originals.
PdfCraftPDF workbenchv0.4.0Early alpha. Advanced editing, conversion, signatures and PDF/A/X/UA preflight remain limited; malformed-PDF hardening is incomplete. Do not use an untested result as compliance evidence.
EffectCraftMotion graphics and VFXv0.6.0In development. Cannot open .aep/.aepx or use After Effects plug-ins. Test new compositions; platform interactions still need validation.
DesignCraftPage layout and publishingv0.4.0In development. Test IDML/PDF and print output; full CJK composition and frame grids remain unfinished.

PhotoCen: an IGEARS-operated AI image option

PhotoCen is an IGEARS-operated AI image-generation and editing platform. It is a separate commercial service to evaluate, not an open-source desktop editor or a replacement for the full Creative Cloud suite. This publisher/operator relationship is disclosed here.

The current site advertises 10 trial credits, with browser generation using 2 credits and editing using 1 credit. Check current pricing, plan limits and model terms before budgeting; trial credits do not establish zero ongoing cost.

PhotoCen’s Terms allocate rights in your own generated or edited output only to the extent applicable law permits and IGEARS has transferable rights. They do not guarantee copyright protection, uniqueness or freedom from third-party claims. Obtain permissions for your inputs and intended uses.

Follow PhotoCen’s current creative-use restrictions on documentary/news claims, real or famous people and brand endorsements. Do not present generated creative imagery as evidence of a real event.

Generated or edited images may be an alternative to some paid stock-image purchases when the current service terms, image-specific rights and intended use allow it. Previewing an image library does not grant usage rights: the library licence is subject to approval. Verify that approval and any restrictions before client or commercial use.

Supporting detail

Run a real deliverable through a controlled trial

Use authorised copies and keep the Adobe original as the baseline. Select one actual team deliverable for each proposed workflow; a successful demo or matching menu label is not acceptance.

  1. Record the exact application version, operating system, fonts, plug-ins, camera/codec inputs and required output. Test the team’s supported macOS and Windows environments separately; an available download is not proof that the workflow runs.
  2. Open/import or recreate the sample, make a real edit, save, close and reopen it, then export and inspect the result in the receiving application. Where a format supports it, test a round trip back to the baseline tool. Record lost editability and visual changes.
  3. Agree pass/fail criteria for colour, typography, layers, timing/audio, metadata, print preflight or PDF/OCR as appropriate. Retain comparison images, files, logs, timings and the client or print provider’s acceptance.
  4. Keep Adobe licences and recoverable originals until the required workflows are accepted. Document exceptions, training, parallel-operation costs and rollback; move only the tasks that passed.

A phased migration path

  1. Discover.
Inventory systems, contracts, data, permissions and business-critical workflows. Record owners and acceptance criteria.
  2. Pilot.
Recreate one real deliverable and obtain client or print-provider acceptance for edits, colours, fonts and output.
  3. Rehearse.
Time exports and imports. Reconcile record counts, relationships, attachments and reports against the source.
  4. Coexist.
Define the source of truth, prevent duplicate writes and monitor the interfaces between old and new systems.
  5. Cut over.
Use an agreed change window, decision owner, communication plan and a clear rollback deadline.
  6. Operate.
Train users, document recovery and retain required history before retiring the source.

Risks and security considerations

Format support is not full feature fidelity. Keep licensed access for exceptional projects until an alternative workflow is accepted.

Protect exports and temporary staging data, restrict migration accounts, use encrypted transport and remove temporary access after acceptance.

Rollback and acceptance

Keep a validated source backup and a record of post-cutover writes. Decide whether rollback restores the old system or replays changes, and rehearse that procedure. Business owners must sign off reconciled data and representative workflows before final retirement.

Implementation effort and ongoing care

The initial effort category is High. It is an editorial screening assessment, not a time or cost quotation. A pilot is required to estimate delivery. Plan for patches, monitoring, integration maintenance, backup restoration and user support.

Common questions

Can one application replace the entire platform?

Sometimes the core use case fits one application, but specialised workflows often require several components. Validate feature gaps before committing.

Can we keep parts of the existing system?

Yes. A hybrid or phased approach can reduce disruption when system boundaries and the source of truth are explicit.

Will open source cost less?

It depends on licensing, migration, infrastructure and operating costs. Compare the same planning period using realistic inputs.

Sources and verification

Policies and features can change. Verify the current terms and your installed edition before implementation.
