Start with three separate questions
Who owns the subscription account? What does expiry change in the installed edition?Read more
Can the owner purchase and activate a replacement licence without losing content? Record the vendor document, review date, account owner, renewal date and staging test result for every essential plugin. The notes below reflect official documentation reviewed on 13 September 2026; terms and behaviour can change.
Elementor Pro: continuity needs an explicit test
Elementor says non-renewal prevents Pro updates and adding Pro features, and may limit access to existing Pro features.Read more
Free Elementor features continue. It also warns that updating the free plugin without the Pro counterpart can create compatibility problems. Do not promise that every existing Pro widget, template or editing workflow will remain unaffected. Establish an owner-controlled licence or test a rebuild of the critical templates before ending the agency arrangement.
WPML: account takeover is not just handing over a key
WPML identifies updates, support, translation-credit benefits and new-site registration as renewal considerations.Read more
Its current policy says new transfers of renewals to clients are unavailable from 13 January 2026; earlier transfers continue for existing end users. A client taking over a site should purchase their own subscription and re-register it. Inventory translation data and workflows separately, and verify automatic-translation billing and credits before disconnecting an agency account.
ACF PRO: field editing and new PRO fields are distinct
ACF documents restrictions on updates and premium features without valid activation.Read more
For a previously activated site whose subscription has expired, its activation guide distinguishes editing existing PRO field definitions from creating new PRO fields. Preserve field groups, configuration exports and the theme code that renders them. Stored field data is only one part of a working website; a new maintainer also needs to understand the templates and field structure.
Gravity Forms: changing the licence is different from rebuilding forms
Gravity Forms documents continued operation of its existing plugin and first-party add-ons after licence expiry, with limitations and loss of benefits such as updates and support.Read more
Its licence-change guide says replacing the key does not change forms or lose data. This gives an owner a potential route to their own licence. Still test payment, email, CRM and other external integrations; third-party add-ons and outside services have their own terms.
Which developer policies create practical lock-in?
Watch for an agency-only master account with no client replacement route, undisclosed licence renewals, refusal to provide a usable backup, inaccessible custom code, or a requirement to keep hosting solely to retain essential functionality. A service fee or limited support scope alone is not proof of wrongdoing. Ask for the scope and exit terms in writing, agree any legitimate handover work, and test delivery against a checklist.
A useful audit deliverable
For each plugin, write down: business function; installed version and edition; account and billing owner; expiry effects; export or backup route; replacement licence or component; and test owner.Read more
IGEARS can help build this register and test the most important workflows before you decide whether to renew, change developer or rebuild.
Common questions
Will my website disappear if a plugin licence expires?
There is no universal answer. Some plugins continue with update or support restrictions; other features can be limited. Hosting, domains and external services may expire separately. Verify the exact plugin policy and test the installed site.
